Things That Go in Your Mouth
Re: Things That Go in Your Mouth
Whole Foods actually does a pretty damn good in-house salmon jerky, but it's pretty much just called that. It's really just chunks of hot-smoked salmon brined in various seasonings. It's way different than the bagged, genuinely dehydrated kind.
But lox is the only kind of salmon that I can personally enjoy on a regular basis any which way.

I know, that's why I had to get it.
It was HEB/Central Market brand stuff. It's like... it tastes like beef jerky. Except stronger. So much stronger. Like, smoked beef jerky to the nth degree. Then you taste the fish.
When you open the package, you can smell it from across the room.
Small pieces of it might make for good fried rice. Chances are I'm just going to use it as treats for my dog. He loves fish.

Oddly enough, I tried it again, and it actually tasted better. I think opening the package up and airing it out improved the taste.

Okay I've decided that good goat cheese is the single greatest food known to mankind.
Re: Things That Go in Your Mouth
If I still ate dairy I'd probably have a log of goat cheese with cranberries and cinnamon in the fridge right now.

Last week I made a bunch of goat cheese, apple and honey sandwiches on wheat. They were amazing. There's also a cafe here that makes a mean goat cheese, turkey, pistachio and apricot jam sandwich.
Re: Things That Go in Your Mouth
Man... I hadn't really thought of adding it to sandwiches. I gotta try that.

Made chicken marsala, a favourite dish, for the first time ever at home. Was not disappointed.

I don't think I've ever posted about it, but Buge is a pretty mean cook. Today he made a really excellent chicken shepherd's pie, with half-regular and half-sweet potato topping.

Instead of beef. It works fine.

Shepherds do not typically deal in either beef or chicken. Shepherd's pie is lamb or mutton.

Re: Things That Go in Your Mouth
So there's a food truck that stops near my work on Wednesday called Rhythm and Wraps, which makes absolutely incredible vegan wraps. They're all rap themed - Gangsta Wrap, The Wrapper's Delight, Resolution Wrap, etc.
I finally managed to figure out what they used as a meat substitute (which is fucking indistinguishable from sausage), and it is apparently a grain meat called "Field Roast." It's pretty much available nowhere, but as luck has it, there's one store within walking distance of my new apartment that carries the stuff.
Made some last night for dinner. It's really damn good, but a bit sparse when there's nothing else added to the dish. Next step is to try to mimic the actual wraps. I think I'll try green peppers and onions, carmelized, ballpark-sausage style.

Shepherd's (or Cottage) pie is made with whatever leftover meat you have available, because you're poor and that's why you're having a "throw random leftovers into a pie pan and cover with potatoes" meal in the first place.
Re: Things That Go in Your Mouth
I get the feeling a lot of things from those days were made from whatever leftover meat folks had available.
Wonder if naming your dishes was even a thing yet.

Well, it was leftover chicken, so there.

Dinner is bacon and brussels sprouts, with garlic. Weaponized flatulence to follow.
