The Winter Up There Must Give People Brain Freeze
Re: The Winter Up There Must Give People Brain Freeze
Speaking of, there seems to be a lot more shooting deaths happening in Toronto lately. :(

I know this is sort of a minor news item from a global perspective, times change, etc. But I suppose it hits me personally because this was what my grandad did for a living after WWII, driving the Greyhound routes between Winnipeg and Western Ontario.
I have to say, I've never had a complaint about Greyhound myself, the times I've taken long bus trips (the sketchy terminal in Buffalo however... But everything in Buffalo is sketchy).
:/

Yeah, this is going to be a huge problem for the rural west and central areas, because Greyhound was literally the only transportation network left. It's even worse than when Ontario Northland gave up and Northern Ontario lost all train service.
BC tried replacing the lost northern routes last year and backed off saying it was too expensive to subsidize. No idea if the western provinces will band together to try and cobble together some kind of replacement, maybe with federal help (perhaps a VIA subsidiary?). There's a patchwork bus network between some Alberta regional hubs which started up last year, but that's not even close to solving this problem.
But yeah, this is actually a big deal.

Yep.
I'm not sure if the lazy reversion to 1998 is better or worse than them trying to come up with a new policy, considering who it is.
That headline doesn't even touch on the worst part: Consent. The newer curriculum had a much stronger emphasis on consent. That goes away I suppose.

Vancouver just instituted a tax on unused housing and the owners are scrambling to sell or rent those properties before the tax goes into effect. That housing could have been used, but wasn't, because it was more profitable to purchase it, leave it empty for a year or two, and then sell it at a profit.
Hopefully this brings the cost of living down in Vancouver. Eventually, I mean.

Including 10 people shot just ten blocks or so away.
Placeholder for something witty that doesn't make me sound like an asshole

You may have seen in the news that the Saudis are throwing a temper tantrum at Canada because we keep telling them, in our mildly Canadian way, that we're not happy about them jailing women for being women, or the men who defend said Saudi women.
Well...
It's nice to see the Saudis being more blatant about who they really are. I suppose the days of them shipping all their deranged young extremists off to be someone else's problem still aren't over, but some of those chickens are coming home to roost anyway.
EDIT: Updates.

Technically this is now past this being a Canadian issue, but might as well continue here.
Re: The Winter Up There Must Give People Brain Freeze
Who exactly do they think is going to buy that excuse?
Re: The Winter Up There Must Give People Brain Freeze
Who exactly is going to take the Saudis to task for it in any real way?

I'd just like to take a moment to say how much I enjoy the fact that the ceremonial dress of Canada's Supreme Court is basically a Santa suit.

Judge knocks down Dougie's attempts to cut Toronto city council in half in the middle of an active election
Called him out directly too:
Of course our poor city clerk is going to have yet another nervous breakdown...
Called him out directly too:
“It appears that Bill 5 was hurriedly enacted to take effect in the middle of the City’s election without much thought at all, more out of pique than principle,” the ruling reads.
Nor was any reason given for addressing the issue of voter parity in the middle of an election provided, the judge rules, summing up the province’s evidence in one word: “Crickets.”
Of course our poor city clerk is going to have yet another nervous breakdown...

And Dougie decides to go straight for the thermonuclear option.
Well. This should be interesting. Let it not be said that Dougie will let anything stand in the way of his petty personal grudges!

I'd have never guessed that I'd be happy about the Supreme Court siding 9-0 with Rogers, but well, strange days.
OTTAWA -- Internet service providers can recover some of the costs of helping movie companies and other copyright holders find illegal downloaders, the Supreme Court of Canada says.
In a 9-0 decision Friday, the high court sided with Rogers Communications in ruling that the companies pursuing copyright violators should reimburse service providers a reasonable amount for the effort of looking up subscribers suspected of breaking the law.
