So I caught an episode of Space Dandy. I really wanted to love it, but it kind of sucks.
Animation is great, design is great, characters are good, dub is good. Everything else feels like some 4Kids show they didn't know what to do with.
It's really, really weird to see Watanabe just slap something like this together with the bare minimum of effort.

While I have not seen any of it myself, I've heard the first couple of episodes are not so great. Everybody that mentions it seems to love the rest of the show, though.

Kill la Kill is kind of amazing. It's by the Gurren Lagann people.
The Mega-toon thread
I feel like we probably want a dump thread for topics we don't know will go anywhere.
Anyway,
Why is Kill La Kill making me feel more uncomfortable with the fanservice than Gurren Lagann did?

Re: The Mega-toon thread
Because the gender ratios in Kill la Kill are actually balanced, where Gurren Lagann's two female characters were a useless token and a plot macguffin, respectively.
Doesn't bother me, but that's because I think it's intentionally over-fanservicey. It is to high school fighting animes what Gurren Lagann is to mecha anime, and that means taking tropes and going berserk with them.

Alrighty, done.
Yeah, I've heard this too. I really cannot get past how annoying it is that a company as awesome as Gainax feels the need to surround every scene with lazy-ass fanservice.
Still, everything I've seen of Mako makes me really want to check this out.

The fanservice in Gurren Lagann was more or less complimentary to the characters involved even if it did objectify them. The fanservice in Kill la Kill is mostly rape jokes. Actually, fuck that, Kill la Kill is mostly rape jokes.
Re: (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
I don't think I've seen many rape jokes in kill la kill, and any actual rapey stuff in it is no joke.
Re: (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
Yyyeah what the hell are you even talking about?
Re: (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
I dunno if Japanese uses the same figurative language, but the super battle sailor suit literally forces itself on Ryuko (the main character). After removing her non-magicalsuper-science clothes without her consent.
I dunno if that's played for laughs, per se... but it did get a bit... weird?
Then there's the number of times Ryuko awakens with frightening people watching over her mostly-disrobed body. Up to and including Mikisugi, one of the characters who's fanservice-y properties are (sometimes) amped up toward the level of the female leads.
"All rape jokes" is obviously hyperbole, but there's enough testing-the-line stuff in the first episode that I could see someone getting really put off.
But, I mean, I powered through that. Is this a case of a bad first impression then?
I'm not sure that adds up, because...
This is exactly why I thought the show would be amazing and decided to power through it in the first place.

Definitely more of that in the first episode yeah, but considering the people who made it I'm not surprised. It feels a lot like gunbuster/diebuster in that a lot of it is really painful to watch and I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

In Kill la Kill, Isshin Matoi, Ryuko Matoi and Nui Harime all wield the scissor blade in Kill la Kill. Incidentally, Isshin and Nui, as well as Senketsu, are each missing one of their eyes. Nui is missing her left eye, Isshin and Senketsu are missing their right eyes. Incidentally, Ryuko and Nui wield separate halves of the scissor blade. I think this was intentional.
